Closing line value: the number sharps check before win rate
CLV measures whether the market moved toward your position after you took it — the fastest honest test of whether a prediction method has real edge.
Twenty picks, fourteen winners — is the method good, or warm? Results alone can't tell you for months. The number professionals check instead is closing line value: did the market move toward your position after you took it?
The logic
The closing price is the market's best-informed number — every injury note, lineup decision and sharp dollar has been absorbed by first pitch. If you consistently beat that close — took the 52% price on what closed at 56% — you are repeatedly ahead of the information flow. Luck can win you games; it cannot systematically move markets toward you, bet after bet.
Fast, and unforgiving
CLV's other virtue is speed. Every bet produces a verdict the moment the game starts, win or lose. Twenty bets of consistently positive CLV says more about a method than fifty bets of results — and negative CLV with a winning record is the market's way of saying you've been lucky. Honest modellers fear that combination most.
How we hold ourselves to it
The engine behind Modal's numbers captures the closing line on every live bet it places, and its right to keep betting is contractual: positive CLV after twenty settled positions, or the model goes back to development. When we say the numbers are honest, this is the mechanism doing the enforcing.
Frequently asked questions
What is closing line value (CLV)?+
The difference between the price you took and the final price before the event started. Consistently beating the close means you're seeing information before the market prices it — the most reliable indicator of genuine edge.
Why is CLV better than win rate for judging a model?+
Win rates need hundreds of results before luck washes out; a 60% run over twenty picks proves little. CLV converges much faster, because every single bet produces a verdict on your timing regardless of how the game ends.
